This it the story of the mountain man's beginnings and how he came to dwell on the plains.
A star in the east
three Queens they did follow
but the first had been turned upside down.
There deep in the mountains
a star fell from heaven
and into darkness I came down.
The light of my world
no more than a peck
sought growth and so it did expand.
And I wandered around
dark worlds east and west
looking for the brightest of lands.
I then settled right in
not far from my start
and here’s where our story begins.
High in the mountains
is where I abide,
from peak I came down to the world.
And in upper valleys
I dwelt for some time,
no more than a sheltered child.
I played in the woods
and I ran through the hills
I danced on the lake and I swam.
I thought to myself
what a wonderful place
yes, here would my childhood span.
But then one day
the devil he came
and whispered a word in my ear.
He said, dear boy
there’s more to this world
and you know, you won’t find it here.
So, I tucked that away
told myself I would stay
but it wasn’t too long till plans changed.
You see the sun was setting
on the days of old
and darkness was soon to derange.
But my friends close and near
seemed to not share my fear
they told me the light would not leave.
So I said what the heck
have you not seen the devil?
They cried ‘witch’ and then spoke of my grave.
So I packed all I owned
told them I’m hitting the road
never again to return.
From the mountains went I
to the coast I did I fly
and sat by the sea in a dark world.
I looked out from here
and saw the lights of mankind
dimly glowing at best.
So I said in the midst of this battle,
I must find light in myself,
If I am to ever find rest.
I went back to the mountains
to be in the light once again
the light of not man, but of me.
[missing verse]
And here I did I meet
two men, each had dogs,
they said circle darkness and light 14 years.
And then near the end
you’ll be dead for 3 more
you’ll be brought to your knees in your tears.
But having suffered the pain
the price you’ll have paid
and you’ll rise from the dead now they’ll see.
Both heaven and earth
will bow at your knees
and the light you once saw now you’ll BE.
So here from this chasm
between old things and new
I set out to find my way.
But here in the mountains
valleys, lakes and their fountains
I knew I had fulfilled my stay.
So I couldn’t remain,
o’er the hills the war waged
so I picked up and left for the plains.
And I went a new man
darkness still in my hand
and when I arrived I surveyed.
But here wasn’t for me
and so I returned to the sea,
through the mountains I journeyed for days.
And back at the coast,
this time safer inland,
again did I survey my gaze.
Then I was told by the devil
that this one’s for me
but I said, my dear devil it’s not.
[missing verse]
"Before I leave one more time
let me show you what’s mine,"
this I said to the devil my bitch.
And I took him in his guile
said, "this one’s more my style,
'cause you see devil, I’M the Witch!"
"And I’m done with you devil,
the shot caller’s dead,
for now that job is mine."
"But don’t leave my sight
you’re coming with me tonight
my darkness in the light for all time."
So from there I did rise
darkness chained by my side
I journeyed again to the plains.
And I here I did settle
studied, ventured and battled
14 years I put on display.
I stayed and I fought
and I fought and I stayed
around and around I did go.
And I warred and I danced
and I danced and I warred
up and down my world did flow.
But then one day
again something changed
and the orbit began to descend.
For three long years
down and lower it went
till I screamed, "my god, THIS is the end!"
And all was lost
the devil had won
the night had taken the day.
And the fires of hell
having raged, having swelled
smoldered and faded away.
And in ashes and ruin
I looked at my world
it was then that I rose from my grave.
[missing verse]
My world was dead
I saw darkness had won
but behold the break of dawn.
For the night was over
now it’s the time of the sun
and I said to myself “let’s move on”.
